One-time lump sum - $100,000 if felonious or accidental death; $25,000 if based on presumption
- Benefits given out based on beneficiaries in officer's will
- If no will, benefits go to officer's spouse
- If officer has children with a different person than the officer's current spouse, 2/3 of benefit is divided among children; 1/3 goes to current spouse
Health insurance paid - state will pay premiums
- for spouses until re-marriage
- for children until end of year in which they turn 26
Tuition waiver -

- applicable at Virginia public colleges and universities (state colleges, community colleges)
- college must waive tuition and fees
- college must waive cost of books and supplies
- for spouses
- for children until end of year in which they turn 26
- must have letter from head of law enforcement agency (chief, sheriff) stating that officer died in line of duty and you are officer's spouse or child
- after acceptance to college, bring letter - it is a good idea to bring the letter to the Dean of Students at orientation - also good idea to bring a print-out of Virginia code section 23.1-609
- can take as many classes or semesters as desired
- can stop and start again
- does not need to result in degree
- must maintain satisfactory academic progress
